UCLA RIVALRY MOMENTS

BASKETBALL GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

1928-- In the first year of the rivalry series, UCLA won two of three games, by scores of 34- 27 and 47- 37, both at USC.

1943-- After losing 42 games in a row from 1932 to 1943, UCLA snaps the losing streak with a 42- 37 victory over the Trojans at UCLA.

1949-- In John Wooden's first year as head coach, UCLA played USC four times and won three of the encounters, 74- 68 at UCLA, 51- 50 at USC, and 63- 55 at UCLA.

From 1952 through 1963 under Coach Wooden, the two teams met 38 times. During that stretch, UCLA won 25 of the encounters.

1964-- When Wooden's Bruins won their first NCAA Title, UCLA defeated USC three times in the season, 79- 59 at UCLA, 78- 71 at UCLA, and 91- 81 at UCLA (led by Gail Goodrich's 23 points).

From 1964 through 1975, when UCLA won 10 NCAA titles, the Bruins and Trojans met 30 times, with UCLA winning 28 of the encounters.

1966-- UCLA's largest victory over USC came on March 5, when the Bruins defeated the Trojans by 37 points, with a final score of 99- 62, at the Sports Arena. Senior Freddie Goss, who had 23 points, led the Bruins to victory.

1966-- On December 30 , Kareem Abdul- Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) scored a game- high 56 points in UCLA's 105- 90 win at Pauley Pavilion. Abdul- Jabbar's point total continues to stand as the second- highest individual single- game scoring performance in Bruin history.

UCLA has compiled six 100-point games over USC, including a 107- 83 final on Dec. 30, 1966 in Pauley Pavilion.

During UCLA's historic 88- game winning streak, the Bruins defeated the Trojans six times, including an 81- 56 victory on Feb. 5, 1972 at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruin victory came on the strength of Bill Walton's 22points.

1975-- When CoachWooden won his final NCAA title, the teams met twice in two close games. UCLA won 89- 84 at Pauley Pavilion on Feb. 1 behind the strength of Dave Myers' 23 points . The second victory came on March 8 at USC with a final score of 72- 68.

After Coach Wooden's departure, UCLA would continue to lead the series 25- 13, including a nine- game winning streak spanning Jan. 31, 1975 through Feb. 9, 1980.

1995-- In UCLA's 11th NCAA title winning season, UCLA won both match -ups against the Trojans. Their final showdown on March 1 at Pauley Pavilion would feature Bruin freshman phenom Toby Bailey, with a then career and game- high 24 points for a final score of 85- 66. This win would allow UCLA to keep their newly acquired No. 1 national ranking. It also made the Bruins the first team to lock up a berth in the NCAA tournament.

From 1995 through 1999, UCLA won all ten matchups between the schools, including an 82- 75 OT victory at USC on Feb. 18, 1998. Toby Bailey scored the final six points of regulation to force the overtime and scored six more points in OT to lead the Bruin victory. Bailey finished with 17 points.

2002-- With a buzzer beating three- pointer to cap off a 14 point night, Billy Knight lifted the Bruins to a 67- 65 come- from- behind win on Feb. 6th in Pauley Pavilion.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

-On their way to their sixth national championship, UCLA women's water polo defeated USC three times, including beating the Women of Troy 7-6 Sudden Victory overtime of the MPSF Tournament semifinals. A victory that helped UCLA earn a berth in the 2003 NCAA Tournament.

-In 2002 No. 3 UCLA headed to USC to face the number one ranked Trojans. UCLA defeated USC 9-8 off a goal from junior Jessica Lopez with 4:43 remaining in the game. The victory snapped USC's eight game winning streak and moved USC into a tie for first place in the MPSF.

-Also in 2002 the second seeded Bruins defeated the third seeded Trojans 7-6 in the semifinals of the MPSF tournament. UCLA also swept USC in 2002, defeating the Women of Troy three times.

-In the semifinals of the 2001 MPSF Championships the Bruins downed the Trojans in the third overtime 9-8. Neither team led by more than one goal throughout the game. In order to force sudden victory overtime the Bruins needed a goal off a tip in by Robin Beauregard with just one second remaining. Coralie Simmons scored the game winner for the Bruins with 32 seconds left in the third overtime.

-In 2000, UCLA won its fourth national championship in five years by knocking off defending champion USC by a score of 11-4 in the National Championship game.

MEN'S WATER POLO GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

1969 – UCLA defeated USC 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to lead the Bruins to their first ever NCAA title.

1988 – UCLA defeated USC 13-10 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to give UCLA a berth in the national championship match,

1995 – The Bruins beat USC 9-7 in the second round of the MPSF Tournament en route to the national championship.

1996 – UCLA posted a 8-7 win over the Trojans in the National Championship match to give UCLA its first set of back-to-back titles since 1971 and 1972.

2002 – Dan Yeilding scored the game winning goal in sudden victory overtime to lead the Bruins to a 7-6 win in the first round of the MPSF Tournament.

MEN'S BASEBALL GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

1976- The Bruins captured their first conference title (CIBA) since 1969, beating USC on the final day of the season to win the crown. UCLA won the final game on the final day by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Sawtelle Field. The game was dubbed "The Miracle at Sawtelle Field."

1985 – UCLA started a string of 14 consecutive wins over the Trojans with a 9-8 victory on February 24. The Bruins would sweep USC in the 1985 Pac-10 series and take all six contests in 1986 and all three in 1987. The streak would last until the second game of a three game series in 1988 when USC defeated UCLA 8-2.

1999 – UCLA broke a streak of 170 consecutive losses when scoring three runs of less with a 3-2 victory over USC on May 1. Senior co-captain Jason Green provided the key at-bat in the ninth inning.

2000 – UCLA blew out the Trojans, 15-5 in front of a nationally televised audience at Jackie Robinson Stadium on April 8. Josh Karp threw a three-hitter, striking out a career-high 12 batters in the win. UCLA would go on to take two out of three in the Pac-10 series.

2003 – The Bruins broke the Trojans 12-game winning streak over UCLA with a 7-4 win over USC at Jackie Robinson Stadium on March 7. UCLA would go onto defeat USC 17-5 two days later ad earn the series win, while junior Brandon Averill earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors for his play in the series.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

1966: UCLA's first victory against USC, 86-59. Led by coach Jim Bush, the Bruins broke the Trojans 33 year win streak.

1978: The first of UCLA's 22 consecutive victories. The Bruins won 83-71.

1985: First UCLA victory under head coach Bob Larsen. UCLA scored 89 points, USC scored 73.

1992: UCLA's most decisive victory, 123-39, an 84 point margin.

1999: UCLA defeated USC 82-81 in Larsen's last year at the helm of the Bruins It was the Bruins' 15th victory over the Trojans under Larsen. Led by dual event winner Jess Strutzel, who won the 800m and 1500m, it was one of the three closest meets in dual meet history.

2000: The first UCLA victory under head coach Art Venegas. The Bruins defeated the Trojans, 88-75, for their 22nd consecutive victory. The Bruins were led by a one-twi sweep in the 200m by Damian Allen (20.97) and Bryan Harrison (20.98), and a sweep of the 5000m by Paul Muite (14:55.85), Dan Brecht (15:01.56) and Bryan Green (15:05.30).

2003: UCLA defeated the Trojans 82-81, one of the three closest margins of victory in meet history. The Bruins were led by Ben Aragon, who swept the 800m, 1500m and 5000m.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD GREATEST RIVALRY MOMENTS

1984: In the first dual meet between the bruins and Trojans, UCLA defeated USC 76-74.

1989: In UCLA's greatest margin of victory over the Trojans, 73 points, the Bruins scored 101.5 points while USC tallied 28.5.

1994: UCLA defeated USC 94-42 for the first time under head coach Jeanette Bolden.

1998: En route to a 104-50 victory, Bruins Shakedia Jones and Joanna Hayes set three meet records, including a new U.S. Collegiate Dual Meet record of 22.84 in the 200m by Jones.

2003: The Bruins defeated the Trojans, 104-59. Led by three event winner Lena Nilsson, who won the 800m, 1500m and 5000m, UCLA won its tenth consecutive meet with Jeanette Bolden at the helm and 17th overall.
